— -- Katy Perry is finally opening up about her split from John Mayer earlier this year.

The pop singer spoke with Chelsea Handler for the July issue of Cosmopolitan magazine, saying: "Sometimes you have to go through all this sh*t to get your grips on life. You have to go through the mud in order to find that peaceful place."

Asked about her ex, Perry said there's no hard feelings.

"I’m living in the now and not fantasizing about the past," she said. "I have a lot of respect for [John] still, and I know it goes both ways. There’s no bad blood, but I’m sure there will be inspired songs."

Mayer and Perry split more than three months ago, but even with that breakup and a failed marriage to Russell Brand that ended in 2012, Perry spoke about what she now looks for in relationships.

"I like when I can really be myself, wear less makeup, have off-color humor right off the bat," she revealed. "When I can scare them with the truth and they’re not scared. I think when I’m myself is when I’m probably the most attractive to someone else."
