— -- Lady Gaga is joining forces with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to combat sexual assault on college campuses.

The pair penned an op-ed piece, which appeared exclusively on Billboard.com, to push for a bill that Cuomo introduced back in February to make college campuses safer.

"By passing legislation such as the bill currently before the New York State Legislature, we can turn the tide on this issue so that students can realize their dreams on campuses that are safe spaces," the two wrote. "That’s why we are joining together to take a stand against sexual assault on college campuses. Quite simply, enough is enough."

The governor's legislation, which New York lawmakers have until June 17 to decide upon, will extend policy and protections passed last year by the state's public university system to the more-than-1-million college students throughout the state, including at private universities, according to Cuomo's website.

"Sexual assaults are not just violations of local campus rules -- they are crimes that must be treated as such," Gaga and Cuomo wrote in the op-ed article. "Victims must know that they have the right to call the police, and they must be supported in their recovery, regardless of whether that could mean negative publicity for their school."

Last year, Gaga hinted at her experience with sexual assault while speaking to Howard Stern about her song "Swine."

"I went through some horrific things that I’m able to laugh now because I’ve gone through a lot of mental and physical therapy, and emotional therapy, to heal over the years," she told Stern last December. "I was a shell of my former self at one point. I was not myself."

Since then, she has been vocal on the issue, even recording the song "Till It Happens To You" for the Sundance documentary, "The Hunting Ground," about sexual assault on college campuses.
