Comic-Con 2016: Everything You Need to Know About 'Luke Cage,' 'Iron Fist' and 'Defenders'
Who they are and what's in the three epic clips!
— -- Netflix and Marvel just dropped three crazy clips last night as Comic-Con started in San Diego.
First, "Luke Cage," which debuts in September. We last saw Cage, played by Mike Colter, in "Jessica Jones."
Minor spoilers ahead.
"Luke Cage"
Cage found out Jones, his love interest, had actually killed his wife and to make matters worse, Luke was then controlled by the villain Kilgrave, who can manipulate minds. He eventually was freed, but his future was left uncertain at the end of "Jones" season 1 ... until now -- he's basically going to kick butt in NYC against anyone hurting the innocent.
The clip is flawless, set to the track of Wu-Tang's "Shimmy Shimmy Ya."
It opens with the character "Pop" telling him to help people with his incredible power and unbreakable skin. "The others downtown" are referenced, which means Daredevil, Jones and Iron Fist, who we HAD yet to meet. We'll get back to this later.
The music kicks in around the 20-second mark, then he gets to work.
The hoodie goes on and he literally rips a car door off as protection to take some bad guys down who are shooting at him. Later in the clip, he says with his hands, "Come on." in one of the greatest, most bravado scenes in Marvel TV and movie history. Yes, you read that correctly.
Cage kicks down a metal grate for fun as bullets graze off him. At the end, we meet Cornell Stokes, played by Mahershala Ali. Stokes is the villain Cottonmouth from the Power Man comics.
"You knocked down a few doors, now you Harlem's hero," he says, laughing.
"I'm just getting started," he replies.
YESSS!
"Iron Fist"
Now, for our next hero. We met Iron Fist for the first time last night and there's a lot to expect from the hero played by Finn Jones (you may know him from from his role as Loras Tyrell on "Game of Thrones").
This clip opens with a young Danny Rand, who suffers and survives a tragic plane crash. But he is rescued by monks. We then see our hero locked up in some kind of hospital before punching his way out.
"Hello Danny," is heard, right before his logo takes over the screen.
This show is "coming soon."
YESSS two times!
"The Defenders"
Next up, Marvel TV and Netflix's gritty version of "The Avengers" aka "The Defenders."
This group is a great complement to the heroes on the silver screen.
The clip is only a minute long, but features newspaper clippings with great hidden eggs like "Nelson and Murdock" from "Daredevil" and "Alias Investigations" from "Jones," all set to Nirvana's "Come as You Are."
Seagate Prison, Danny Rand (aka Iron Fist), and possibly Stick, Daredevil's mentor, are all featured as well. It's a visual feast for comic fans.
"The Defenders" is set for 2017.
The full team is Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
YESSS times three!
