'The Maze Runner' Sequel Tops the Weekend Box Office

— -- "The Maze Runner" sequel won the box office race over the weekend.

"The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," the follow-up to the 2014 original, earned an estimated $30.3 million from Friday through Sunday to open in first place.

"Black Mass," starring Johnny Depp as gangster Whitey Bulger, debuted in the runner-up spot, collecting $23.4 million.

The thriller "Captive," featuring David Oyelowo and Kate Mara, pulled in $1.4 million in approximately 800 theaters, finishing outside the top 10.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales, according to Rentrak:

1. "The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," $30.3 million

2. "Black Mass," $23.4 million

3. "The Visit," $11.3 million

4. "The Perfect Guy," $9.7 million

5. "Everest," $7.6 million

6. "War Room," $6.3 million

7. "A Walk in the Woods," $2.8 million

8. "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation," $2.3 million
