Royal Baby Watch: Duchess Kate and Prince William Send Sweet Surprise to Fans Outside Hospital
The pink ribbon atop the box of treats led to speculation on the baby's gender.
— -- A still-pregnant Duchess Kate and her husband, Prince William, sent boxes of treats to royal super fans waiting outside St. Mary’s Hospital -- but it could be what is on the outside of the boxes that matters.
The two boxes of pastries and croissants were wrapped in pink ribbon, leading those desperately awaiting the royal baby’s birth to speculate it could be a girl.
Royal sources insist Kate, 33, and William, 32, do not know the gender of their second child. Their first child a boy, Prince George, will turn 2 in July.
The Duchess has said publicly she is due sometime between mid-April and the end of the month so fans have been camped outside St. Mary’s Hospital’s Lindo Wing – where Kate is expected to deliver – for weeks.
Though Kate and William obviously did not deliver the special treats - which also included coffee - themselves, Palace officials confirmed the treats came directly from the royals.
“The Duke and Duchess wanted them to know they were thinking of them,” a Palace official told ABC News. "They saw they had been camped out and wanted to send over some breakfast.”
Kate is waiting out her pregnancy at her and Prince William’s home in Kensington Palace. The duchess avoided a potential logistical nightmare by not delivering on Sunday, which was also the day around 30,000 runners descended on London for the city’s marathon.
By not delivering though, Kate missed the opportunity for the baby’s uncle, Prince Harry, to immediately meet his new niece or nephew. Harry, 30, has been stationed in Australia as part of a month-long exchange program with the Australian Defense Force. He was in London Sunday to hand out medals at the London Marathon before returning to his duties in Australia.
