Raspberry Awards Honor Worst Films

March 24 -- Just before Hollywood is to honor its best with a gleaming trophy called Oscar, tinseltown also celebrates its worst.

The worst achievements in movies are given a nod at the 21st Annual Golden Raspberry Awards which took place in Los Angeles Saturday. The ceremony awards the worst movies and performances of the past year.

Battlefield Earth and Blair Witch 2 were just two of the many movies towin. Battlefield Earth went home with awards for the worst director, worstsupporting actress (Kelly Preston), worst screen couple (John Travolta andanyone on the screen with him), worst supporting actor (Berry Pepper), andworst actor award (John Travolta).

In a statement, the producer of the movie, Elie Samaha,said he was delighted: "I welcome the free publicity. The morethe critics hit Battlefield Earth, the more DVDS it sells.

"It is the kind of film that makes a movie legend andwe feel we have enough staying power to last long after thecritics have quieted down."

Based on a science fiction novel by L. Ron Hubbard, thefounder of Scientology, the film has won praise from somescience fiction groups despite the critical blasting itreceived.

Other awards went to Madonna for worst actress in The Next Best Thing,and Book of Shadows, Blair Witch 2 for worst remake award. None of the winners were present to accept their awards.
