Sylvester Stallone Wins Golden Globe Award for Role in 'Creed'
The actor calls Rocky Balboa, his iconic character, his "best friend."
— -- Sylvester Stallone took home the Golden Globe Award for his role in "Creed" Sunday night and received a standing ovation from the award show crowd.
The actor noted how important this moment was in his long acting career. Stallone was last nominated for a Globe in 1977.
"It was a long time ago," Stallone said when he accepted the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. "It was a different situation."
The actor, who reprised his iconic role as Rocky Balboa in the seventh film of the "Rocky" film franchise, called the character during his award acceptance speech, "the best friend I ever had."
Backstage, Stallone said it was remarkable that he was being recognized for his work on the "Rocky" film franchise after so many years.
"I did not expect to win at all," he told reporters. "Just the mere fact that these incredible people were applauding it makes me realize that in life, it's really never over ... and people should never give up trying. So I think it's a very, very positive message for everybody."
Stallone also said the award meant a lot to him because it honored his late son's memory. Sage Stallone, who died in 2012 at age 36, played Rocky Balboa Jr. in the 1990 film, "Rocky V."
"I just wanted to respect his memory and I think we did. So it was good. It was good," he said.
In fact, the Oscar-nominated actor said his win Sunday night was made even more special because his daughters could finally understand he was a bonafide movie star.
"I was a kind of peripatetic actor, on the road all the time and I really wasn't in the moment," Stallone explained. "Then I realized that family is everything and that's the greatest award you can get. So finally they get to understand that they have a caring father, that movies are wonderful but they pale in comparison to the movie of life, which is making them go on into the future and be very very successful. That's my duty. That's my mission and I give my wife all the credit."
