Let the debate begin! Stephen Colbert was just named the new host of "The Late Show."

CBS announced today that the current host of "The Colbert Report" will take over for David Letterman when he retires next year.

Colbert told ABC News that he will ditch his current alter ego for his new role.

"I won't be doing the new show in character, so we'll all get to find out how much of him was me," he said. "I'm looking forward to it."

Excellent choice. A natural wit surpassed only by his keen insight and intelligence.

Acting - and SINGING talent. He's going to soar.

Often when he's interviewing he drops the character. That's when you see he's not just a good actor backed by great writers. He's intelligent,sharp-witted, and most importantly for an interviewer, disarming.

STEPHEN!! STEPHEN!! STEPHEN!! STEPHEN!! STEPHEN!! STEPHEN!! STEPHEN!!

Those Who Think Colbert is a Poor Choice

I think it's a mistake. Colbert is known for his character, and he has NEVER been out of character--this will be a jarring transition for people to accept a new persona.

well that should put the final nail in the coffin..good work CBS

Not a fan of Stephen Colbert. He's too outlandish, sarcastic, a wee bit loud. I think it should've been Jon Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld, Seth Meyer, and Seth McFarland. Or...perhaps changing old traditions by replacing male host spot with awesome, witty and funny Tina Fey.

Not impressed..,what about Chelsea Handler?

EHhhh - I don't know :/ We will see... Love and will miss David

Fans Who Will Miss "The Colbert Report" and Faux Colbert

But ... but ...The Report..... I don't want to lose The Report!
MidwestKris

Yeah, what if we don't like the real Stephen. I fear for our future.
Joel Mielke

That's just it. I've always loved his faux Colbert character. I'm not sure how he'll do as a straight-laced act. Hopefully he keeps some aspects of his show/persona intact.
Travis Stoffs

The Colbert Report is a fresh format that has decades left in it. I seriously hope the 'aww shucks I'm honored, I'll do it' wears off and Colbert backs out.
Scent Ofreason

I can't wait to see what he comes up with, but at the same time it will be sad to lose The Report.
