Reporter: It's the competition of all competitions where the underdogs become the alpha dogs. We are always like that. Reporter: And the winner isn't the best in show -- but perhaps the worst. Everybody said we had the world's ugh I lest dog and go to the contest, we did. Reporter: It was the 26th annual world's ugliest dog contest held at the fairgrounds. You realize that beauty is subjective. Reporter: Who's to judge? Would you believe me? In an ugly sort of way. But the canine that took home the crown -- Peanut. I think that he is just got an amazing, strong spirit. Reporter: For "Good morning America," Cameron Mathison, ABC news, Los Angeles. And we are joined by peanut, the world's ugliest dog. First of all, congratulations. Thank you. Tell me why you wanted to enter peanut into the competition. The biggest reason is we wanted to raise awareness for animal abuse. This is a wonderful platform for that. Peanut was a shelter dog. Yep. And you were able to rescue him. Yep. Stiff competition, a lot of other dogs. $1500, how are you going to spend the cash? Use it for medical bills for other abused animals. What do you think it is about peanut that made him so appealing? It was just his personality. He shines through, and it really captures the judges' hearts. He deserves it. He is smilesing. He hasn't stopped smiling since I got out here. Did he get a special treat? What did you do to celebrate? We went straight to the hotel and went to sleep. That's fantastic. This is about raising awareness. What do people need to know, what's the message for dog like peanut and others. This is an important distinction. You're not making fun of ugly dogs. There is that message. Peanut was burned as a puppy, and we want his face out there to show what can happen to dogs that are abused. And so I want everyone to feel it in their hearts this is what happens. We need to put a stop to it. Tell me about peanut. He seems calm and sweet. When he's at home, he does nothing but play with toys. He loves dog beds. Dog beds are his favorite thing.
