Robin is going to be honored at this year's espy awards with the arthur ashe courage award. it's an award that's given to those who have turned their mess into their message, lauded for bravery, commitment to help others even while they're facing incredible challenges obviously. Well deserved and the thing is, listen to the impressive company that robin is now going to join. Legendary tennis player arthur ashe was the very definition of digny and grace both on and off the court. Using his celebrity to champion various causes that shed light on the plight of the less fortunate. In 1988 I have aids. In 1992 ashe announced he had aids. A year later he passed away but his determination lives on. It is said that a champio is a person who enriches the sport by his presence and leaves the game better for having been in it. Arthur ashe was such a champion. In 1993, espn's espy awards presented the very first arthur ashe courage award in his honor celebrated n.C. State basketball coach jimmy valvano battling cancer was given the award. Don't give up. Don't ever give up. Reporter: Over the years recipients have included muhammad ali, billie jean king and pat summitt but not just professional athletes. In 2002 the award was given posthumously to tom burn net, jeremy glick and todd beamer who tried to save the passengers on united flight 93 on september 11th, 2001. I am just honored. That's not even the right word. When my espn family called me i was absolutely speechless. Arthur was a ar, dear friend of mine and we served on boards together and I remember one thing he told me, he said when it's all said and done if all people can say about you is that, hey, you were a pretty good broadcaster, you haven't fulfilled all that you can do in life so I really appreciate this honor from espn. Our family is going to be there. Wow. You fulfilled a whole lot. There are many worthy people. I just feel like I'm ray symbol for all those who have gone through some struggles in life and come out on the other end and to be a thriver as well as a survivor.
