When Is It Best To Send People To Psychiatric And Other Mental Health Specialists To Diagnose An Anxiety Disorder?

Question: When is it best to send people to psychiatric and other mental health specialists to diagnose an anxiety disorder?

Philip G. Levendusky, Ph.D., McLean Hospital

Answer: Well the diagnosis of an anxiety disorder has to be done by a mental health professional. It's not the sort of determination that a lay person could make. However, being sensitive to characteristics of an individual that would suggest that they might have an anxiety disorder would then allow that person to suggest to the individual that maybe they would want to seek further assistance in making a definitive diagnosis.
