Question: What classes of medication are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders?

Barbara Rothbaum, Ph.D., Emory University

Answer: The medications that are used most often to treat anxiety disorders are called the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs for short. They're approved for most of the anxiety disorders. Very often people will use benzodiazepines or anxiolytics, known more commonly as tranquilizers, to treat some of the anxiety disorders as well.
