Robert Findling, M.D., Director, Child and Adolescent Psychology, University Hospitals Case Medical Center

Question: Will people be able to notice that my child is on medication for bipolar disorder?

Dr. Findling answers the question: 'Can Others Tell My Child Is On Meds?'

Answer: Well ideally the short answer is that the youngster is being treated appropriately with medicine for bipolar illness. It shouldn't be terribly noticeable to others. Certainly some medicines can cause stiffness in walking or perhaps tremor, but again if managed properly and the medicines are selected appropriately that with time a youngster shouldn't look medicated.

And in many ways, if all goes well, they can lead normal, healthy childhood, adolescents and certainly not be terribly impacted by this illness that can really be very, very difficult for many.
