— -- Question: Is electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) safe and helpful for the treatment of bipolar disorder?

Answer: Patients with bipolar disorder can have either mania or depression. An ECT is effective in both. ECT can treat patients in a manic phase and cause them to go back to a normal state, as well as in a depressed phase. So ECT is very effective in the treatment of bipolar disorder both for the manic and the depressed phase.
