What Is A Mood Stabilizer?

Question: What is a mood stabilizer, and which medications are classified as such?

Answer: Mood stabilizers are medications that are used to treat the symptoms of bipolar disorder -- also known as manic depressive illness. Typically they include some of the anti-seizure medications, as well as lithium.

Although the Food and Drug Administration does not use the term mood stabilizer, it does approve a number of medications for the treatment of bipolar disorder.
