— -- Question: Can A Physical Exam Determine That I Have A Herniated Disc?

Answer: Your doctor should be able to make the diagnosis based on the physical examination and the history of your complaints.

If you have a herniated disc, quite often you would experience low back pain radiating to the lower extremities. You might have sensation of pins-and-needles in one or both of your legs.

On the physical examination the doctor would feel muscle spasm in the muscles surrounding your spine. Your pain would be made worse by bending, lifting or twisting.

You should have certain other findings on the physical examination, which should lead your doctor to the diagnosis of a herniated disc which can be further confirmed by certain diagnostic studies.
