— -- Question: How do I ensure my child receives proper diabetes treatment at school?

Answer: Well if your child has diabetes, they have to take it to school with them. The first thing to do is sit with your health care provider and work out a diabetes care plan for the school setting. There's a wonderful guide by the National Diabetes Education Program and you can get it on their website. It gives you all the issues about diabetes management in school including how to establish one of these care plans.

Take that care plan to the school, sit with the school nurse, talk about all the things that need to be done -- blood glucose testing, insulin delivery, how to treat high and low blood sugar. And with all that accomplished and you monitoring that everything is occurring the way it should, your child can succeed intellectually, emotionally, and medically in a school setting.
