Question: What kind of bread should I be eating?
Answer: The best kinds of bread to be eating are those that are high-fiber breads. Bread is a great opportunity to get the important fiber that you really do need to get in your diet every day. That's really everybody -- not just people with diabetes -- need to be having a good fiber intake. About 25 grams a day, and that is a bit of a challenge to get that much fiber, and so picking breads that are high in fiber – multigrain, those that have the least amount of processing – and certainly you can have bread in your diet as somebody that has diabetes. It's, again, a carbohydrate source, so you want to be sure that you know the amount of carbohydrate. On average, a piece of bread has about 15 grams of carbohydrate in it. So when you have developed a good meal plan with your healthcare team, you can check and see where bread will fit in. And if you're having a sandwich, that would probably use up about 30 to 40 grams of carbohydrate. So you just need, again, to be paying attention to the amount of carbohydrate in that bread and picking the ones that have a good high fiber content.
