What Are Some Safety Points To Keep In Mind If I'm Exercising In The Heat?

Question: What are some safety points to keep in mind if I'm exercising in the heat? (maximum time, water, salt, etc.)

Ben Elder, Certified Trainer, Ochsner's Elmwood Fitness Center

Answer: Well, there are three keep points to keep in mind when you're exercising in the heat. There is about a three, excuse me, four to six week period of acclimation. So, whenever you start training in the heat you need to stay hydrated. You need to adjust either your duration of your activity if you're just starting out -- so if I'm normally running at a certain pace then I'm going to need to either run it slower and keep the same duration, or if I've been training for a period of time I can keep the same intensity or same pace of my training but I need to cut down the duration until I acclimate.
