Is There A Connection Between Intelligence And Stress?

Question: Is there a connection between intelligence and stress? (Do smarter people feel more stressed?)

Katherine Muller, Psy.D., Montefiore Medical Center

Answer: There actually is no evidence that there's a connection between intelligence and stress. Researchers have looked at this for many years and what they've found is there really is no determining factor. Intelligence really doesn't have anything to do with your ability to feel stress or your ability to cope with stress. What we do know, though, is that if an individual is finding that they're dealing with difficult things in their lives, that really it doesn't have anything to do with their intelligence level. We find that sometimes folks who have higher intelligence may actually find different ways to cope or different strategies to use, but that's really the only difference we see. There's no difference in actual levels of stress.
