Boy With 'Internal Decapitation' Needs 'Votes' for Wheelchair Van


"He still doesn't grasp what happened," Galindo added. "In his mind, he fell off a bicycle."

But he is surrounded by love. Galindo said her boyfriend Josh has been a "positive father figure" in the boy's life. "He has taken care of Zakk since the first day of his accident and Zakk sees him as his dad."

Now, the family is hoping readers will vote for Zakk. The person with the highest vote qualifies to go on to a second round and a panel of judges will review all submitted stories. The contest deadline is May 9.

Zakk's mother reminded supporters to take an extra step when voting. By answering a daily question, you get an extra vote. "It gives you two votes instead of one," she said.

She posts the answers on Zakk's Wheels Facebook page.
