Pig Ear Pet Treat Recall

M U R P H Y, N. C., Aug. 1 -- A pet treat maker has voluntarily recalleddog treats made from pigs ears, saying the items may becontaminated with salmonella.

Carolina Prime Pet said Monday that pet owners can become ill by handlingthe treats, then touching food or their own mouths without washingtheir hands first.

The treats are labeled Pig Ears Product Code 10102100Count or Smoked Pig Ears Product Code 10103 100 Countand were sold between April 16 and April 26. The ears are distributed inPennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and theDistrict of Columbia by Super Dog Pet Food Co.

A federal Food and Drug Administration test was positive forsalmonella, while tests by three independent laboratories werenegative, Carolina Prime Pet said.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimesfatal infections in the very young or old, or in people who haveweakened immune systems. Healthy people may suffer fever, headache,vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain or diarrhea.
