"There is no need to scare parents into forcing their infants to eat food before they are ready, in the false belief that exclusive breastfeeding is harming their babies," said Burger. "Fortunately, I find most parents and pediatricians show more common sense about when their babies are ready for solids than researchers who have a potential interest in marketing a product."

On Jan. 20, U.S. Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin will release a Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding at George Washington University.
