The Buzz on Burton
March 9, 2011— -- Fashionistas rejoicing over Kate Middleton's rumored choice of Sarah Burton to create the commission of the century will have to wait until April 29 to see if she's the chosen one. But if the bride-to-be does don a Burton creation, she would have one woman to thank.
Shortly after Middleton announced her engagement, Buckingham Palace asked stylists and editors to name their top choice to design the wedding dress.
British Vogue editor Alexandra Schulman, the Anna Wintour of Britain, reportedly recommended Burton. Sources whispered to the Telegraph newspaper that "[Schulman] was asked for her first choice and that choice was McQueen."
Burton joined the label in 1996 and rose to become Alexander McQueen's right hand. After the designer's suicide in February 2010, Burton was named creative director.
Daily Telegraph fashion director Hilary Alexander raved at the idea of Burton crafting a custom-made bridal dress for Middleton.
"If this is true, it's the best news the fashion industry has had in a long time," she said. "It is desperately in need of an injection of fabulousness in the wake of the whole John Galliano scandal."
Burton has designed fabulous frocks for everyone from first lady Michelle Obama to clotheshorse-Carrie portrayer Sarah Jessica Parker.
