— -- Two American service members were killed after an attacker wearing an Afghan National Defense and Security Force uniform opened fire on their vehicle in Helmand province early this morning, military officials announced.

Members of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission returned fire, wounding the attacker and another person in the same Afghan uniform.

The Associated Press reported that there was an argument between a U.S. Army officer and foreign soldiers before the shooting began.

Instances of Afghan forces turning on allied coalition members, known as insider attacks, have plagued the international war effort in Afghanistan.

In 2014, an insider attack claimed the life of Maj. Gen, Harold Greene, the most senior American officer killed in the 14-year conflict.
