The world watched as tens of thousands of protesters in Egypt called for reform and then celebrated the downfall of President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. Their victory sparked a wave of protests across the Middle East and northern Africa.
Inspired by the Egyptian uprising, and earlier protests in Tunisia, thousands in Bahrain, Libya and other countries started their own revolts, demanding more freedoms and calling for the resignations of leaders who had been in power for decades.
