— -- A small plane crashed into a residential area in Australia today, killing its male pilot and injuring at least one person on the ground, police said.

The accident happened in the Chelsea area of Melbourne.

The small plane, which police suspect was homemade, struck a house and damaged two vehicles, with the plane likely bursting into flames upon impact, police said. Heavy smoke was visible in the area after the crash.

A woman inside the home sustained minor injuries, police said.

Police believe the crash occurred after the plane’s engine stalled.
