Tightening Belts at the World Bank?

Paul Wolfowitz Fights Poverty, but Reveals Low Wardrobe Budget

Caught by a photographer's zoom lens as he entered a mosque in western Turkey, World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz had his toes on display as he took off his shoes -- but he wasn't barefoot.

On a brief visit to America's Middle Eastern NATO ally, Wolfowitz met privately with Turkish Prime Minister Reycep Tayyip Erdogan, and supported Turkey's bid to join the European Union.

Turkish newspapers followed his visit closely -- including the "sock-gate" incident -- because he spoke positively about the country's modernization programs.

As president of the World Bank, Wolfowitz receives roughly $300,000 tax free, plus perks, but was famously shown in a film by anti-war documentary maker Michael Moore using his own saliva to style his hair.

Wolfowitz was heard muttering something as he followed custom and removed his shoes in front of photographers.

Perhaps "darn it" was as angry as he got.
