Dog with deformity gets fairy tale adoption after he's the last one to be adopted at shelter

— -- When one Michigan shelter held an event to empty its cages, all its animals were adopted except for one dog with health issues. But thanks to a Facebook plea, that dog got a fairy tale ending.

Eastwood, a 1-year-old red-coated Labrador retriever, was the only animal left in the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society in Harbor Springs, Michigan, last Saturday after 21 others went home with new families.

The dogs and cats were adopted thanks to an event called Empty the Shelters, sponsored by the Bissell Pet Foundation, which paid for all the adoption fees.

"It was kind of sad," the shelter's communications and marketing coordinator, Jessica Evans, told ABC News. "We were all kind of baffled because, even with his health issues, he's such a nice dog. He's amazing."

Eastwood arrived at the shelter in December after being picked up by a local stray center. He has a deformed leg that could require surgery estimated to cost $4,000, the shelter said. He also has entropion, a condition in which eyelids grow inward.

Still, the shelter had a plan to ensure that all its animals, including Eastwood, found homes. It posted a passionate plea on Facebook for Eastwood.

Within hours, Evans said, the shelter had over 130 voicemail messages and emails, and it and eventually got more than 80 adoption applications for him.

Eastwood was ultimately matched with Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy and his wife, Kim Van Gundy.

The Van Gundys are the proud parents of four children, and they already have six cats and one dog.

They wanted Eastwood to join their large family so badly that Kim Van Gundy put a plea on Facebook, writing in the voice of their pets, "Dear Eastwood, We hope you become our brother! Our people are really nice and we all get along well and have lots of fun together. Fingers (paws) crossed!"

"That [application] stood out," Evans said, adding that they weren't picked because of their celebrity status. "They have a bunch of rescue pets. We knew that Eastwood would be going to a phenomenal home, and they obviously have the financial means to pay for his health care in the future."

After the Van Gundys were informed of the decision, Kim Van Gundy again went to Facebook to celebrate. She wrote, "WELCOME TO THE FAMILY, EASTWOOD!!!"

The Little Traverse Bay Humane Society told ABC News that the Van Gundys will pick up Eastwood from the shelter on Tuesday.

"This is just kind of a fairy tale in the making. For a dog who was probably dumped off on the side of the road ... to turn around and find an amazing home like this, it's incredible," Evans gushed.
