5 Expert Tips for an Elegant and Simple Mother's Day Brunch
Thank mom with a lovely DIY brunch.
— -- What do you give the woman who gave you life? Chances are, moms not looking for anything more than a little appreciation. There's no better way to say "thanks" than an elegant brunch in her honor. Abby Larson, founder of the website Style Me Pretty Living offers these easy tips to make Mother's Day brunch truly spectacular, no reservations required.
"Homemade pop-tarts require nothing more than some pre-made pie dough and your favorite filling," said Larson. "Maybe it's jam, maybe it's Nutella or maybe it's my personal fave...cream cheese and strawberry jelly, just cut same size squares out of your rolled dough and place a spoonful of filling inside. Then use a fork to crease the edges and add a little eggwash before baking (1 egg + a splash of water)."
"Scones are made much in the same way that a biscuit is made. The difference is that scones use egg and biscuits don't," she said. "A scone has a finer crumb and is a bit denser so can hold up to all sorts of fun ingredients like white chocolate and raspberries or lemon and vanilla. Yum all around."
"Floral garland is such an easy way to gussy-up a chair. I actually think that floral garland is the new streamer. All it takes is floral wire and a handful of your favorite greens and blooms. The floral wire will hold the stems together which you can then fasten directly to the chair," Larson explained. "Add a bit of ribbon for more lovely."
"A 'sloothie' is a mix between a slushy and a smoothie. It's a smoothie with really no dairy and maybe (shh) a splash of booze," she said. "So I guess it's really just a frozen cocktail. Whatever it is, it's yummy. For ours, we blended frozen mixed berries with orange juice, a splash of grenadine, ice and a bit of lemon-infused vodka and our guests slurped it up faster than we could make another batch."
"If you've got the time and the patience," Larson said, "a crepe cake will most definitely get you the biggest wow of the bunch. Be warned though that crepes err on the delicate side so if you're the kind of person that likes to whip up something fabulous quickly, this cake isn't your friend. It's made by carefully stacking paper-thin crepes on top of layers of berry infused, sweetened mascarpone cheese and the result is truly heaven."
