Fluffy Orphaned Sea Otter Pup Enjoys His Daily Grooming
Keeper grooms baby otter for hours every day to keep him warm and buoyant.
— -- This is otterly adorable.
Take a look at this fluffy baby sea otter undergoing his daily grooming session at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California.
The sweet and snuggly little guy, referred to as “Sea Otter 696” by the aquarium staff, requires two to three hours of rigorous grooming per day to keep him warm and buoyant in the water—but he doesn’t seem to mind!
“Unlike whales, sea lions, and other marine mammals, otters don’t have blubber to keep them warm in the ocean,” the aquarium explains in the description on the YouTube video. “Instead they’ve got a thick fur coat (one million hairs per square inch, more than any other animal!) which they groom for hours every day to keep insulated with air bubbles.”
Sea Otter 696 was orphaned by his mother, but fortunately he’s got all of the aquarium’s staff and volunteers to help him out.
