Inside the Pandemonium Sparked by the Balmain x H&M Collection

— -- If Olivier Rousteing had any question how his collection for H&M would fare when it was released Thursday, the Balmain creative director only needed to take to social media to see the frenzy it sparked.

Twitter was flooded with videos and descriptions of shoppers going crazy for Balmain x H&M, Rousteing's heavily sequined and embroidered collection of men's and women's clothes and accessories.

The tweets described fans lining up outside stores overnight and often nearly trampling each other once they were allowed inside H&M stores, with a at least one account of a London H&M store being closed by police.

Items from the high-fashion, lower-price collection are also already selling on sites like eBay for hundreds of dollars more than their H&M price.

A sequin embroidered runway jacket, modeled by Gigi Hadid, sold for $5,000, while a faux fur jacket from the collection is currently up to a bid of $1,199.

H&M, the low-cost retail chain famous for its collaboration with high-end designers, is not releasing exact sales figures on the Balmain collection so far, saying only that it is “extremely pleased with the response.”

“Overall, the collection has sold extremely well but we will not be commenting on sales,” H&M told ABC News in a statement.

It appears that, as of today, all of the items are sold out on H&M's website except for a Ribbed Bandeau Top priced at $24.99.

ABC News' Will Ganss attended the VIP-pre shop event at an H&M in New York City and called the scene "insane," adding he felt like he was in "The Hunger Games."

"The more experienced fashionistas went in with a war plan, grabbing piles and piles of their favorite items from what could probably be the most anticipated retail line ever," Ganss said.

Making the frenzy around the collaboration even more incredible is that Rousteing is a 30-year-old designer who, just a decade ago, would have been standing in line himself for such a collaboration.

“I think she's a warrior of the modern world,” Rousteing told ABC News’ Mara Schiavocampo earlier this week of the woman he imagined while designing his H&M collection. “She's strong. She's powerful. She’s confident.”

Rousteing, famous for his red carpet, intricately beaded designs and famous muses like the Kardashian and Jenner sisters, told Schiavocampo he sees the H&M collection as a way to bring his designs to the masses.

“It’s a piece of my dream,” he said. “At the end of the day I wanted to make sure that these people that always follow me and love me, but can’t afford this Balmain dream that I’m building, they can actually get a piece of this dream now.”

Leading up to the launch, Rousteing, Balmain’s creative director, heavily promoted the collaboration to his millions of social media followers using the hashtags # HMBALMAINATION and #jointheNation.
