Surprise Solutions for New Year's Organizing

Common items reinvented to help organize your home for the New Year.

— -- If controlling the clutter in your home is high on your list for 2016, we have tips that will help you keep that resolution.

"It’s so much about organizing but it’s also about putting into play things you already have at home, things you enjoy and you just might not see enough," said Sophie Donelson, the editor in chief of House Beautiful. "You have the stuff around the house already."

Donelson appeared today on are common items reinvented, and other surprising solutions to help organize your home and give it a fresh start for the New Year.

Use Glass to Clear the Clutter

Re-purpose glass jars and candy containers to hold bathroom items such as makeup tools.

Using a drink dispenser to store laundry and or dish detergent helps control how much you're using, as well as creating a clean and sleek look for the room.

"It totally looks better," Donelson said. "Organizing is not fun unless you love the way that your home turns out looking and adding extra plastic bins is not always what makes a home more beautiful."

Re-purposing glass jars and candy containers to hold bathroom items such as cotton balls, Q-tips and makeup is a way to contain the clutter, while also making the area pretty, according to Donelson.

Cake stands to increase organizing space

Cake stands add an extra level for making items more handy, as well as lending visual appeal. Plus, it keeps them from taking up space in your kitchen cabinet.

"It's a classic organizational trick," Donelson said on "GMA."

Tension rods for organizing

"Tension rods are a crazy, secret little trick," Donelson said of the inexpensive and invaluable tools for home organization, Donelson said.

In your kitchen, the rods can come in handy for hanging spray bottles by the handle. Save space by dangling them from the upper shelf of a tall cabinet.

Tension rods can also be used to keep cookie sheers and cutting boards in order, or use them in a packing crate to keep your holiday ornaments safe from breakage and easy to unpack next year.

Use tape and clips to display cards and art

Hang up cards and photos using easy-to-remove, color tape.

"This is also great for a kitchen command center," Donelson said of hanging up cards and photos using easy-to-remove, color tape.

Donelson also recommended using binder clips and decorative tacks to hang up children's artwork, in addition to the tape, which can be purchased at craft stores.
