Meet the Students from UNL

— -- Charlie Litton spent six years as an award-winning sports writer in Iowa prior to enrolling as a graduate student in the College of Journalism and Mass Communication. An undergrad of Texas Christian University, he joins ABC News on Campus as the University of Nebraska bureau chief after a successful Carnegie-Knight fellowship this summer at Arizona State's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. There, he joined 10 others on the News21 National team that investigated the national transportation system.

Caitlin Kern, from Maple Grove, Minn., is a senior broadcasting student. She spent last summer covering sports for the Fox affiliate KMSP, in Minneapolis. Kern was also selected for the prestigious Omaha World-Herald Fellowship, for which she wrote and produced videos for the print and online editions. She also produced videos for HuskerVision, the marketing arm of the university's athletic department. Kern will graduate in May with a broadcasting degree with an emphasis in advertising and concentrations in Spanish, English and history.

Teresa Lostroh is a farm girl from Malcolm, Neb (pop. 450). While she credits her ambition and work ethic to her upbringing on her family's farm, she says her future lies elsewhere in the fast-paced and competitive journalism industry. As a senior news-editorial and Spanish major, she's already spent a summer at the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press as a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund copy editing intern; a summer as a reporting intern at the Norfolk Daily News; and 2 1/2 years as a copy editor and reporter at the Daily Nebraskan, UNL's student newspaper.

Aside from journalism, her main interests are Spanish and traveling, which fortunately go hand-in-hand. Lostroh spent nearly two months in 2008 studying Spanish in Bilbao, Spain, and backpacking in Western Europe. In spring 2010, she spent a full semester in San José, Costa Rica.

Andrew Mach, a senior, is pursuing degrees in broadcasting, news-editorial and German, with a concentration in history. Most recently, Mach was selected to be a 2011 Carnegie-Knight News21 Fellow, earning him the distinction of participating in a 10-week national reporting expedition this summer in Phoenix. In summer 2010, Mach interned at The Washington Post as a multimedia and video journalist, shooting and editing daily breaking and feature news videos for washingtonpost.com.

While in D.C., he also worked on projects for the Newseum and the Freedom Forum. In 2009, Mach interned in Berlin at ZDF, Europe's largest television network, where he aided in the production and planning of "ZDF Morgenmagazin," the network's national morning news program. While in Berlin, he also reported for The Local, an online news portal offering Germany's news in English. Mach's other journalism experience includes reporting for the Norfolk (Neb.) Daily News and producing a multimedia podcast for the International Quilt Study Center & Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. Mach is a native of Aberdeen, South Dakota.
