Obama speaks to Latino group, Romney hosts three-day retreat, plus more to watch for this weekend in politics
— -- Thursday it was Mitt Romney talking about immigration at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials convention; Friday it will be President Barack Obama speaking at the Tampa, Fla., gathering.
Obama issued a directive last week that would exempt from deportation thousands of young immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children. The measure also would grant them two-year work permits. Romney again labeled Obama's plan as a temporary fix in his Thursday speech and said that as president he will come up with a long-term solution.
Obama won 67 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2008, and national polls show him with a commanding lead among Hispanics so far in 2012.
Romney convenes a three-day "Leadership Retreat" on Friday in Park City, Utah. Friday will include sessions on health care and financial services. Saturday's theme is "Innovation in America," and there will be golf on Sunday. The participants amount to a who's who list of Republicans, including potential Romney running mates and more than 100 of Romney's top donors. Not there: Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. He was invited but opted to spend the weekend with his family.
Also worth noting: Obama will attend a campaign event in Tampa after his immigration speech. Florida is a battleground state in the November election.
And then there is this: Rielle Hunter appears on ABC's "20/20" Friday evening to talk to Chris Cuomo about her current relationship with John Edwards, his relationship with their 4-year-old daughter Quinn, and what she would have said if called as a witness in the former North Carolina senator's trial. Hunter has a book coming out June 26 titled, "What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter, and Me."
