Romney slams Obama on May jobs report

— -- Mitt Romney was quick to hit President Obama for Friday's job numbers, which showed a weaker-than-expected 69,000 jobs added in May and a slight uptick in the unemployment rate from 8.1 percent to 8.2 percent last month.

In a statement, Romney called the report "devastating news for American workers and American families."

"This week has seen a cascade of one bad piece of economic news after another. Slowing GDP growth, plunging consumer confidence, an increase in unemployment claims, and now another dismal jobs report all stand as a harsh indictment of the president's handling of the economy," Romney said in a statement, adding that is is "clear to everyone" that Obama's policies have "failed to achieve their goals."

"The president's re-election slogan may be 'forward,' but it seems like we've been moving backward," Romney added. "We can do so much better in America. That's why I'm running for president."

Romney has made Obama's handling of the economy front and center of his campaign. This week, he's slammed Obama repeatedly for being "hostile" to job creators. And on Thursday, he made an unannounced appearance outside headquarters of the controversial energy company Solyndra in Fremont, Calif., to slam Obama's approach to "free enterprise" and job creation.
