Nov. 4, 2008 — -- In an historic end to an epic election, Democratic candidate Barack Obama clinched the presidency Tuesday night.

His ascendency to the Oval Office marks a milestone in American history, almost 50 years after the height of the civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King. The rookie senator from Illinois is the first black man to be elected president, and he'll inherit a country more economically and socially divided than it has been in decades.
