Mitt Romney Records Robocalls for Ted Cruz
Romney recorded the calls ahead of Tuesday's nominating contests.
— -- Mitt Romney took his willingness to support Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz one step further by recording robocalls for the Texas senator.
In the calls, first reported by The Daily Caller, Romney encourages voters in Arizona and Utah to support Cruz. A call targeting Arizona voters was released today and another call will begin ringing in Utah homes tomorrow. Both Utah and Arizona will hold nominating contests tomorrow.
“I’m calling to ask you to join me in supporting Ted Cruz for president this Tuesday in the Utah Republican caucuses. This is the time for Republicans across the spectrum to unite behind Ted,” Romney says in the call targeting Utah voters. "And at this point, a vote for John Kasich is a vote for Donald Trump.”
The calls follow a Facebook post released late last week in which Romney revealed he would be supporting Cruz in the Utah caucuses. Romney, the former Republican presidential nominee, has been a prominent face in the efforts by Republicans to stop Trump.
He’s called Trump a “phony” and a “fraud,” and said he would help the remaining GOP candidates in the race beat Trump. And he has: Romney recorded robocalls for Marco Rubio before he suspended his campaign. He also appeared at campaign events in Ohio for Kasich. And, over the past few days, Romney seems to have focused his efforts on helping Cruz.
Romney’s support of Cruz has drawn the ire of Trump, who publicly questioned Romney’s Mormon faith. Cruz has not commented on the calls recorded by Romney but spoke glowingly over the weekend of Romney and defended him from Trump’s attacks.
"Mitt Romney encouraged Americans across this country to come together and vote for Ted Cruz. And Mitt went on to say a vote for John Kasich is a vote for Donald Trump, because Ted is the only candidate who can beat Donald Trump. Mitt gave a heartfelt call for Americans to come together to unite behind our campaign,” said Cruz yesterday in Peoria, Arizona.
Cruz continued: "And Donald Trump’s response was to come to Utah and to question Mitt Romney’s faith. It truly was stunning."
