Speaker Ryan Supports Trump Releasing Tax Returns, Defers on Timing

— -- House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday that Donald Trump should release his tax returns, noting that he did so as a vice presidential candidate in 2012.

Asked if it would be a "good idea" for Trump to release his returns, Ryan said, "I released mine. I think we should release ours."

"I’ll leave it to him when to do it," he added.

Ryan noted that the New York real estate mogul has said he is being audited by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

"I know he’s under an audit and he has an opinion about when to release those," Ryan said.

Trump, who told ABC's George Stephanopoulos that people "don't care" about seeing his returns, has said he'd release them when the audit is complete. Trump is not legally prohibited from releasing the returns, which would provide insight into his finances.

Hillary Clinton and her running mate, Tim Kaine -- along with Trump's vice presidential pick, Mike Pence -- have released their tax returns.

Senate Democrats unsuccessfully tried to force a vote today on a measure requiring presidential candidates to release tax returns.
