Top Senate Republican John Cornyn Slams Donald Trump Wall Idea as 'Naive'
Donald Trump's border wall fails to impress Texas Sen. John Cornyn.
— -- Texas Sen. John Cornyn dismissed presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall on the United States’ southern border to stem illegal immigration, and to get Mexico to pay for it.
Cornyn, the Senate majority whip, told a scrum of reporters Tuesday, "I would hope that we would talk with a little bit more precision about what we mean when we talk about border security. This idea that all you can do is build some obstacle and people won't go come over it, or go under it, or go through it is naive.”
When Cornyn was asked whether he thought Trump understood the border issue, he said, “That’s certainly not my sense,” according to The Hill, which first reported on the comments.
Cornyn, the No. 2-ranking Senate Republican behind Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, added that he supports “tactical infrastructure or fencing” and a “virtual border.”
Cornyn spokesman Drew Brandewie declined to comment on whether Cornyn would support having the Mexican government pay for any of the U.S. border security measures.
