— -- More than 11,000 athletes will be competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Here are stats, facts and more on 28 athletes you should know and watch out for at the games beginning this weekend:

1. Michael Phelps

Olympic Medals: 22, 18 of which are gold

Fast Facts:
• Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time.
• This summer, he will become the first American male swimmer to have competed in five Olympics.
• The swimmer was diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.) at age 7 and was directed to the pool to relieve excess energy.
• Phelps ate 12,000 calories daily during his training for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
• His son, who was born this past May, is named Boomer Robert Phelps after Phelps' swimming coach Robert Bowman.

2. Ryan Lochte

Fast Facts:
• Lochte is the current world record holder for the fastest 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley in Men's Swimming.
• He said he lived on McDonald's during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
• Lochte is the proud owner of two dogs named Carter and Yeezy, named after Lil' Wayne and Kanye West's famous shoes, respectively.
• As a teenager, Lochte was a handful at swimming practices, where he would pull on other teammates' legs, blow bubbles underwater and hide at the other end of the pool, according to his father.

3. Missy Franklin

Olympic Medals: Five, four of which are gold

Fast Facts:
• Franklin currently holds the world record for the fastest Women's 200-meter backstroke.
• She told ABC News' "Good Morning America" that her favorite TV show is "Scandal" and she has a celebrity crush on Chris Pratt.
• Her one-word motto? "Relentless."

4. Yusra Mardini

Sport: Swimming

Events: Women's 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly

Age: 18

Height: 5' 6''

Olympic Experience: The upcoming games in Rio will be her first time competing in the Olympics

Fast Facts:
• Mardini is one of 10 athletes competing for the Olympics' first-ever team made up of refugees.
• She fled Syria in August of last year after her home was destroyed.
• After reaching Turkey, Mardini and 19 other refugees arranged to travel to Greece by boat. After the boat's motor stopped working, Mardini, her sister and two others got off the boat and into the water to give it more buoyancy. They helped push the boat for over three hours until they finally reached Lesbos.

5. Dipa Karmakar

Events: Women's uneven bars, beam, vault, floor exercise and individual all-around

Olympic Experience: The upcoming games in Rio will be her first time competing in the Olympics

Fast Facts:
• Karmakar is the first female Indian gymnast to ever qualify for the Olympics.
• She is also the first Indian gymnast, male or female, to qualify for the Olympics in 52 years.
• Karmakar is one of very few female gymnasts in the world who have successfully landed the Produnova vault, which requires two-and-a-half somersaults before landing.

6. Simone Biles

Sport: Gymnastics

Olympic Experience: The upcoming games in Rio will be her first time competing in the Olympics

Fast Facts:
• Biles is the first female gymnast to win three consecutive world all-around titles.
• She’s won 10 titles in just three world championships.
• Biles collects turtle figurines as souvenirs from her travels.
• Her favorite cuisine is Italian and her favorite hobby? Shopping!

7. Aly Raisman

Olympic Medals: Three, two of which are gold

Fast Facts:
• Raisman is the captain of the U.S. Women's Gymnastics team at the Olympics this year.
• She was also captain during the 2012 Olympics, when she became the most decorated American gymnast at the games that year.
• Raisman finished fourth on the 16th season of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" in 2013.
• She plans to pursue a career in fashion and expand her signature line of leotards and socks in the near future.

8. Gabby Douglas

Olympic Medals: Two, both of which are gold

Fast Facts:
• During the 2012 Olympics, Douglas became the first African American to win gold in the Women's Gymnastics individual all-around event.

• A Vanity Fair writer calculated that between the ages of 6 and 16, Douglas spent approximately 18,000 hours training.

9.Chris Brooks

Olympic Experience: Named an alternate in the 2012 Olympic Games in London

Fast Facts:
• Brooks is captain of the U.S. Men's Gymnastics team at this year's Olympics.

• He's a car and motorcycle hobbyist and loves rap and classic rock music.

10. Sam Mikulak

Olympic Experience: Got fifth place during the London 2012 Olympic Games in the Men's Gymnastics' team all-around and vault events

• Mikulak posted the highest all-around score at the Olympic Trials this year.
• He began gymnastics at only 2 years old.
• Mikulak co-founded an herbal tea company called MatéBros with two of his gymnastics friends from home

11. Ibtihaj Muhammad

13. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce

    • Fraser-Pryce became the first Jamaican woman to win the 100-meter Olympic gold medal in 2008.

    • Fraser-Pryce has been selected to be Jamaica's flag bearer at the opening ceremony at the games this year.

    Fast Facts:
    • Armstrong, who is not related to fellow cyclist Lance Armstrong, is the most decorated female cyclist in U.S. history.
    • She started her Team USA journey at 17 as a Junior Olympian in swimming.
    • Armstrong has also competed as a triathlete in the Hawaii IRONMAN World Championship.
    • The bike she had won an Olympic gold medal with in 2012 was stolen while she was traveling from Germany to the U.S. Two sponsors presented her with a replica replacement the next year at a tour in California.

      • Dutton is the oldest member of the U.S. Olympics team this year.

      • Dutton and his wife, Evie, own, manage and train out of True Prospect Farm in West Grove, Pennsylvania, and at their Red Oak Farm in Aiken, South Carolina.
