Daily Fantasy Golf: Farmers Insurance Open expert picks

— -- As part of ESPN Fantasy's efforts to give daily gamers intel on whom to target in DFS, our fantasy golf experts are here to share the players they view as building blocks for this weekend's event. The panel for the Farmers Insurance Open features ESPN.com's Jason Sobel, Michael Collins, Bob Harig and Kevin Maguire, as well as SportsCenter anchors Matt Barrie and Jonathan Coachman and FantasyGolfInsider's Roger Casey, Jeff Bergerson and Zach Turcotte.

Matt Barrie -- Jimmy Walker ($10,100)

Jason Day would be the easy pick here, but it's Walker who has a little momentum after back-to-back top-15s in Hawaii. More than his recent good play, Walker's length measures well for Torrey Pines and that has been obvious of late, with Walker finishing in the top-10 three of the past four years in La Jolla. Early-season golf is where we tend to see Walker shine, and he'll do it this week at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Jeff Bergerson -- Brandt Snedeker ($10,700)

Bombers are going to be popular this week because Torrey Pines South is the longest course (7,700 yards) on the PGA Tour all season. Snedeker is not considered a bomber, but his distance is not shabby either, ranking 52nd in driving distance. What he does do among the best players in the world is putt. Snedeker has also been playing outstanding lately with a win at the Franklin Templeton Shootout in December, a T-3 at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and a runner-up at the Sony Open. He has also had great success at this tournament in the past with five top-10s in nine appearances, including runner-up in 2010 and 2013 and a win in 2012. At $10,700, he is the fifth-highest priced player on DraftKings this week, but he will be worth it.

Roger Casey -- Patrick Reed ($10,600)

There is no better contrarian play this week than Reed. With all the disappointment surrounding Reed last week, many will probably let their recency bias get the better of them to justify fading him. Don't be one of those people. Reed had seven straight top-10 finishes up until last week and he's $1,800 cheaper this week. His new-found driver accuracy should suit Torrey Pines South beautifully. He made the cut a couple years back in his only start here, but since Reed is also not normally viewed as a bomber, it will be easy for him to get overlooked.

Jonathan Coachman -- Brandt Snedeker ($10,700)

Although I am looking forward to Jason Day defending his title, I am going to pick a guy who seems to be refocused and came close to winning a few weeks ago. Snedeker is not the longest hitter, but he is hitting it well enough to follow up on his performance in Hawaii. This year will be about momentum and using previous week's to set up future wins.

Michael Collins -- Brandt Snedeker ($10,700)

We've all heard of the saying "horse for the course." More than half of his starts in this event have resulted in top-10 finishes, with four of those being inside the top three.

Bob Harig -- Harris English ($8,500)

The former Georgia star has struggled of late, posting just a single top-10 since his playoff loss at Torrey Pines a year ago, which has meant a drop outside of the top 100 in the world. But English has also been a steady performer, missing just four cuts during that stretch. Perhaps a return to San Diego is the spark he needs.

Kevin Maguire -- Jamie Lovemark ($8,300)

In our picks to start 2016, I hailed Lovemark as a "breakout" star for this season. He has since gone T-7 at the Sony Open and T-6 last week at the CareerBuilder Challenge. He got a taste of the Sunday pressure in Palm Springs, so watch for the SoCal kid to go even higher on the leaderboard at Torrey Pines.

Jason Sobel -- Hideki Matsuyama ($10,300)

In this era of the big three or big four or whatever we're calling it this week (the era changes on a weekly basis), it feels like young, elite players are either part of the in-crowd or they're out. Well, this breaking news just in: The group is going to keep growing and Matsuyama is just another of those super-talented young players who will try to change the narrative of next week's era. On a ball-striker's venue like the two Torrey Pines courses, expect big things to come from this under-the-radar guy.

Zach Turcotte -- Smylie Kaufman ($7,300)

One of the best young newcomers on tour this season, Kaufman has done his part to live up to the hype. He won the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in October, owns four top-10 finishes since the season started and has made the cut in all seven of his starts. He hits it 300 yards off the tee, ranks 32nd in strokes gained tee to green, is 48th in strokes gained putting and sits at ninth in par-5 scoring, all key metrics for the event this week. Though this will be his debut at Torrey Pines, his skill set, current form and incredibly reasonable salary of $7,300 make him a great golfer to start with this week and still have plenty of cash left over to build a solid lineup.
