Dana White to Holly Holm: Ronda Rousey is your next fight
— -- Holly Holm's camp has enough doubt that Ronda Rousey will be ready for a proposed July 9 rematch that they'd like to go ahead and have her defend her belt in the interim against top-ranked contender Miesha Tate.
But UFC president Dana White made it clear that "it's Rousey" next for Holm, telling the Los Angeles Times that Rousey, who he calls a good friend, "is the fiercest competitor I have ever met in my life."
"Ronda's never lost a fight. She will overcome it and be back," White told the Times.
Immediately after Holm (10-0) shocked the world by knocking out the previously invincible Rousey (12-1) with a left head kick to claim the 135-pound championship, White said that booking a rematch would "make sense."
Holm's manager, Lenny Fresquez, told the Times that he received a proposal for the fight during a Monday meeting with UFC officials, at which he was told a date was cleared as part of UFC 200, scheduled to take place at a newly constructed arena in Las Vegas. But Fresquez believes that Rousey will not have recovered from the tough second-round knockout on Nov. 14.
"I'm not sure Ronda will be ready for a July fight," Fresquez told the Times. "She took a severe beating and I don't think it's in her best interest to take the next fight so fast. They told me she's been ready and cleared, but ... ."
"Holly's used to staying active. We're from the old school and we believe the No. 1 contender is there for a reason. ... [Tate] deserves a shot, but it's not for me to decide."
White insisted Rousey would be ready.
"We're real concerned with [Fresquez's] opinion," White said sarcastically.
