Jordan Spieth ends Tiger Woods' 13-year reign atop earnings list

— -- For the first time in 13 years, Tiger Woods was not the top earner in golf.

At $53 million in on-course winnings and off-the-course endorsements, Jordan Spieth was the top earner in 2015, according to estimates by Golf Digest.

Spieth earned more than $23 million on the course, thanks in part to winning the Masters, the U.S. Open and the Tour Championship and picking up the $10 million FedEx Cup bonus. Golf Digest estimates that Spieth made $30 million off the course. He also signed a new 10-year deal with Under Armour that included equity in the company earlier in the year for an undisclosed sum. His other major deals include AT&T, Titleist and Rolex.

Phil Mickelson finished at No. 2 with $52.3 million in total take despite not winning a tournament.

Woods, who has been on top of the list since it was started in 2002, finished third with $48.5 million. It's the first time Woods -- who had his second straight year of making less than $1 million on the course in 2015 -- finished with less than $50 million in a year since 2001. The magazine has tabulated the 14-time major champion's earnings for each year of his career.

Woods, who Golf Digest estimates has made $1.4 billion on and off the course in his 20-year career, made more than $100 million per year from 2007 through 2009.

While Woods still has his Nike deal, his line has never fully recovered from the fallout associated with his extramarital affairs. Retailers also haven't been selling as much because he has either been out with injury or performed poorly. In 2015, Woods didn't wear the shoe that Nike sold to the marketplace as his signature shoe.

Woods also lost the cover of the EA Sports video game to Rory McIlroy. It's McIlroy who takes the fourth spot with earnings of $46.9 million, with Arnold Palmer, who turned 86 in 2015, rounding out the top five with $40 million in earnings.
