— -- Jerry Kill has retired as football coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, effective immediately, because of medical concerns, it was announced Wednesday.

The 54-year-old Kill, who missed a scheduled meeting with the media Tuesday, has dealt with the effects of epilepsy since 2005 and took a seven-game leave of absence in 2013 after a series of seizures.

A source told ESPN's Brett McMurphy that Kill is "tired and not feeling great," but that "he doesn't want to have it get to the point it was [in previous years]."

Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys, who has worked with Kill for the past 21 years, has been named interim head coach.

Kill, who had not missed time on the sideline since the 2013 episode, was 29-29 in five seasons at Minnesota and directed the Gophers to eight wins in 2013 and 2014. Minnesota played in its first New Year's Day bowl since 1962 after last season.

His career record is 156-102.

The Golden Gophers host Michigan on Saturday night.
