Police now investigating incident involving 76ers rookie Jahlil Okafor

— -- Boston police are now investigating a street fight involving Philadelphia 76ers rookie Jahlil Okafor that took place early Thursday, according to a statement issued Friday evening.

According to the statement, a man filed a police report Friday morning stating he was the victim of assault and battery outside the Storyville nightclub on Exeter Street in Boston at around 2 a.m. on Thursday. The man said that Okafor and another man approached his group and asked some of the women for their phone numbers. When the women declined, a verbal altercation ensued, followed by a physical scuffle. The man said Okafor pushed him and punched him, knocking him to the ground and causing a cut over his eye that later required stitches. 

Police said they are "actively reviewing" the case and no charges have been filed. Police had said earlier Friday that they would not investigate the case unless someone involved came forward to say they were the victim of a crime.

Okafor addressed the incident Friday with reporters.

"It was definitely dumb on my part," Okafor said. "It's something that I am embarrassed about. [I'm] still dealing with the league and the team. But I'm not happy about it at all."

TMZ released video Thursday that showed a man it identified as Okafor verbally sparring with several individuals. A scuffle broke out, and the man identified as Okafor is seen punching a man.

Describing what prompted the altercation, a source close to Okafor told ESPN's Jeff Goodman, "Apparently they said, 'The 76ers suck and you guys are all losers. You'll never win a game.'"

"I was around the corner when it happened. I saw [Okafor] a minute after he knocked the dude out," the source said. "I think the guy was just talking s---. Saying the Sixers suck."

Okafor, who was with teammate Christian Wood at the time, said he spoke to Sixers coach Brett Brown about the incident Thursday. The 76ers released a statement Thursday evening saying they were aware of the report and working to gather additional information. An NBA spokesman also said Friday that the league was aware of and looking into the matter.

Okafor was in the starting lineup for the Sixers' Friday night game against the Houston Rockets.
