E3 2013: Giant Gaming Show Starts Today With PlayStation and XBox Events
A week of gaming news kicks off today with Microsoft and Sony events.
June 10, 2013 — -- At this year's E3 video game expo, where press and fans get first looks at upcoming games and hardware, a new generation will be ushered in as attendees go hands-on with the newest systems from PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Starting today, the big Los Angeles gaming show kicks off with press conferences from Microsoft and Sony. For the rest of the week, the show floor will be open as gaming companies reveal new titles and show off new gaming consoles.
For those of you not there to press buttons and flick screens in person, ABC News has you covered. We will be live blogging the week-long show right here, providing updates from the press conferences and from the floor. It will kick off today at 9:30 a.m. PT / 12:30 p.m. ET with the Microsoft Xbox announcement.
We suggested keeping an eye on our live blog, but until then here's what news you can expect to come out of the show.
ABC News Will Live Blog the E3 highlights starting at 9:30 a.m. PT /12:30 p.m. ET
Sony's PlayStation 4
Sony is set to pull the veil off of the PS4, revealing the console's design after announcing the system in February and teasing bits and pieces of the black box's look last month. Expect a release date and price point for the system, hopefully lower than the much bemoaned 2006 PlayStation 3 launch price of $599 for a system with 60GB of storage.
Also likely to be discussed will be more on the Dual Shock's social "share" button and what that will mean in regards to Sony's partnership with Facebook and UStream. Fans of Wii U's GamePad touch screen will be keen to learn more about the compatibility of the PS Vita with the PS4, and the ability to stream games around the home for mobile play.
Details on games like "Gran Turismo 6," "Killzone: Shadow Fall", "Destiny" (from the makers of "Halo") and perhaps the next entry in the "Uncharted" series are expected to be showcased as well.
Microsoft's Xbox One With Kinect
After last month's brief unveiling event, gamers were left with a good feel for what the system will do and how it will attempt to become the all-in-one entertainment system. At E3, expect more demonstrations of the gaming power of the device, after such a TV-focused presentation in May. We also expect a release date and price point.
Microsoft should be sharing details about a next-gen "Halo" and more of the 15 Xbox One exclusive game titles promised last month.
Don't expect to hear from Microsoft execs on DRM protected games, one-on-one interviews with executives have been cancelled.
Nintendo's WiiU and 3DS
Games, games, games – that's what it's going to be about for Nintendo. When it comes to Wii U, we've seen very little from Nintendo's biggest franchises in the time since last year's E3. "Nintendo Direct" live-streams over the first half of 2013 announced an exclusive Sonic game, a "Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker" remake, and many "Pikmin 3" delays. May 17th's Nintendo Direct ended with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime promising a look a new "Super Smash Bros" and a new "Mario Kart" come E3.
A new, non-side-scrolling Mario game is also expected to be announced. We could also be surprised by a new Star Fox, Metroid, Pokemon or Zelda.
Meanwhile, 3DS has seen a considerable bump in must-have titles. "Luigi's Mansion," new "Link to the Past" sequel, "Donkey Kong Returns 3D."
Don't expect new hardware from Nintendo, the Wii U is less than a year old. Also don't expect much third-party game support, though EA has stated that they are actually working on Wii U games after confusion last month that they were shunning the system for future projects.
