— -- The excitement surrounding Edward Snowden joining Twitter this week has left the NSA whistleblower buried in an avalanche of email after he made a rookie mistake.

Snowden tweeted he forgot to turn off the email notification option when he joined Twitter. The result: He said he received an email for the more than 1 million followers he quickly amassed, along with emails for every time someone favorited a tweet, retweeted him or sent him a direct message.

The result: Snowden was sent a whopping 47 GB of email.

He shared his teachable moment and summed it all up with a hashtag: #LessonLearned.
