May 2 -- A weekly feature on This Week.

Voices

Almost 50 years ago, a 25-year-old medical student named Roger Bannister broke one of the toughest barriers in sports history the four minute mile. This Week remembers the remarkable feat.

Announcer: "And a young English medical student, Roger Bannister, is out to break the heretofore unattainable four-minute mile. Despite the slight wind, he is clocking great time. Bannister goes streaking forward with about 250 yards to the tapes. He reaches down for the last ounce of stamina for a final kick. The stopwatch clicks down as he breasts the ribbon and collapses into the arms of the spectators gathered at the finish line. And Bannister has done it! The watch tells the story three minutes, fifty-nine and four tenths seconds."

Second Announcer: "Roger Bannister a 25-year-old medical student engraved his name into the record books with a four-minute mile."

Bannister: "All I can say is that I am immensely overwhelmed and delighted. It was a great surprise to me to be able to do it today, and I think I was very lucky."

Funnies

Washington was Hollywood on the Potomac last night. Drew Barrymore, Ben Affleck and Jay Leno were all on hand for the annual White House correspondents' dinner.

Jay Leno: "You know, I watched Condoleezza Rice testify a couple of weeks ago, and as I watched her I said to myself, 'You know, I've seen that hairstyle before. Where have I seen it?' Can we put that picture up? And then I remembered."

Leno: "Oh yeah, That's where I'd seen it."

Bush: "I was going to start off tonight telling some self-deprecating jokes, but then I couldn't think of any mistakes that I had made to be self-deprecating about. In my recent press conference, John Dickerson of Time magazine asked the question about what I considered my biggest mistake. It was an excellent question that totally stumped me. I guess looking at it practically, my biggest mistake was calling on John.Or take that one about Cheney and me answering questions together. That was a toughie! So from now on, Dick and I will be holding joint press conferences."
