July 6, 2008 — -- Jesse Helms, 86 -- Republican U.S. senator from North Carolina who was a provocative champion of conservatism, known for battling communism, affirmative action and foreign aid.

Clay Felker, 82 -- Founder and editor of New York magazine who was credited with creating the modern magazine formula.

"The whole idea of a new magazine of news, there hasn't been one in over 40 years."

Larry Harmon, 83 -- Turned the flame-haired Bozo the Clown into an entertainment industry staple, entertaining audiences for more than 50 years.

THIS WEEK, THE PENTAGON RELEASED THE NAMES OF NINE SOLDIERS AND MARINES KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN.
